Generic Kemadrin, Procyclidine Pills for the Treatment of Parkinsonism (Paralysis Agitans) and Extrapyramidal Dysfunction Part 1
Drug Description
Generic Generic Kemadrin (procyclidine hydrochloride) is an antispasmodic compound of comparatively low toxicity. It relaxes smooth muscle, which prevents muscle spasms. Procyclidine hydrochloride is a white crystalline material. It comes in tablet form for oral use. Each tablet has 5 mg procyclidine hydrochloride as well as the inactive ingredients such as lactose, corn, potato starch, and magnesium stearate.
Indication
Generic Kemadrin is indicated to treat Parkinson disease.
Contraindications
Procyclidine hydrochloride is contraindicated in angle-closure glaucoma although simple type glaucomas do not appear to be adversely affected. This drug also should be avoided in case you have allergy to any component in Generic Kemadrin.
Dosage and Administration
The dose of the drug to treat Parkinsonism will vary depending on the age of the patient, the etiology of the disease, and individual reaction.
Usually, a higher dosage is recommended for younger and postencephalitic patients compared to older patients and those with arteriosclerosis.
An initial dose of 2.5 mg three times daily after meals is suggested to treat procyclidine hydrochloride. The dose may be slowly raised to 5 mg three times a day and occasionally 5 mg given before retiring.
Patient, who cannot tolerate a bedtime dose of the drug, may need dosage adjustment.
Patients, who are receiving other drugs and want to use procyclidine hydrochloride, can initially take 2.5 mg three times a day for all or part of the original drug.
